On the 6 July 2012 Hylands Park, Chelmsford played host to a special occasion with three distinct elements, each with their own unique quality and all taking place 4.00 – 10.30pm

The London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration
This spectacular event for the whole family commenced with the county’s only London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration. The live stage show was one of 66 performances that will take place around the country as part of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay. It featured exciting entertainment by the three Olympic Torch Relay Presenting Partners; Coca-Cola, Lloyds TSB and Samsung, as well as specially choreographed performances by Pinpoint Create and Walk the Plank working Chelmsford community groups and large-scale audience participation. The show also included the unveiling of an extraordinary glass bead representing Chelmsford, created by local artists. The bead was presented to the Sparks will Fly champions in preparation for the finale. The culmination of the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration was of course be the arrival of the Torch and the lighting of the onstage cauldron from the Olympic Flame.

Feast, Drink & Play!
Following the Torch Relay Evening Celebration, the audience were invited into an adjacent area of the event site to feast, drink and play. A huge variety of refreshments were available including the best of Essex food and drink. There was plenty to do with displays of community sports and arts suitable for all the family. Local music, dance and other performances mixed with inspiring examples of physical prowess, accessible have-a-go sports sessions and an abundance of arts and crafts activities. As the sun begins to set, the world-renowned Red Devils Parachute Display Team descended on Hylands Park with a spectacular display carrying with them the final glass bead to enable the game to begin in the Sparks will Fly: Essex Finale.

The two great champions Boreas Zephyr and Marina Mightier completed their marathon journeys across Essex and came face-to-face for the first time. The expectant crowd were led towards the performance arena where Marina and Boreas competed resulting in a stunning finale to the evening with pyrotechnics, special effects tand a spectcular firework display to finish. The finale show was created by outdoor arts specialists Walk the Plank,

London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay

Chelmsford Borough Council is delighted that the London 2012 Olympic Torch Relay will arrive in Chelmsford on Friday 6 July 2012. There will be a spectacular evening community celebration followed by a tour through the town on Saturday 7 July 2012 at 7am. Just three weeks before the Games begin at the Olympic Stadium in Stratford.

The Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Ray Ride, worked on the application bid to bring the torch to Chelmsford: "I am very, very proud that our hard work has come to fruition and we will be welcoming the Olympic Torch convoy through Chelmsford just three weeks before the Games are due to start. I'm sure we will see a huge public turnout as the community in Chelmsford comes together to celebrate the start of the Games and witness the passage of the torch first hand. It will ignite a spark to light up the occasion!"

The Olympic Flame will arrive in the UK from Greece on Friday 18 May 2012 and the 70 day Torch Relay will start at Land's End, Cornwall on the morning of the 19 May 2012. On leaving Land's End, the Olympic Flame is expected to travel an estimated 8000 miles across the UK, giving thousands of communities and individuals their moment to shine as the Olympic Flame comes to their doorstep.

The Olympic Flame will arrive at the Olympic Stadium on 27 July 2012 for the lighting of the cauldron at the Opening Ceremony, signifying the start of the London 2012 Olympic Games.

The Olympic Flame will shine a light right across the town, celebrating the culture and heritage of the area and showcasing the very best of Chelmsford. The Olympic Flame will be carried across the UK by 8,000 inspirational Torchbearers.”

About the London 2012 Festival
The London 2012 festival is the finale to the Cultural Olympiad, bringing more than 10 million opportunities to see 1,000 performances and events. Leading artists from all over the world will come together for this unique event to celebrate London 2012. Whether you love dance, music, theatre, fashion, food, art or film, you’ll find something you can get involved in. It's happening all around the UK, with many free events suitable for families.

The Festival opens on 21 June and runs to 9 September 2012, the last day of the London 2012 Paralympic Games. There are also countdown events that will run before the Festival opens.

The ballot for tickets is now closed - successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday 27th June.

Terms & Conditions of the Ballot

  • A maximum of six tickets may be applied for per household.
  • Applicants must be 15 or over as of 18 May 2012 to apply for a ticket.
  • The Ballot is open to those who are resident in England, Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, the Channel Isles and the Isle of Man; and to those who have a BFPO address. Other overseas entries will not be considered.
  • Applications may only be made online. Anyone without access to the internet will be able to visit the Chelmsford Council Customer Service Centre where staff will be happy to assist them in completing the form using the self service stations. Alternatively, they can visit Chelmsford Theatre Box Office where a member of staff will complete the form on their behalf. Residents from across the county who do not have internet access at home can visit any Essex library to use the computers there. Members of staff will be able to provide assistance on accessing the internet if required.
  • Only one application per household is permitted - checks will be made to identify and exclude duplicate entries.
  • Applications can be made from 9am BST on 18 May 2012 until Midnight BST on 19 June 2012. Applications received after 19 June 2012 will not be considered.
  • When you apply online you will receive an email confirming the application.
  • After the closing date, The draw will be carried out by representatives from Chelmsford Council and Essex County Council, in the presence of an independent scrutineer. Successful applicants will be notified by Wednesday 27 June.
  • Tickets are not being allocated on a first-come first-served basis. There is as much chance of being selected if the application is made on 18 May 2012 as by the closing time on 19 June 2012. Application does not guarantee that you will receive a ticket through the ballot process.
  • Successful applicants will be notified by the 27th June 2012 by email wherever possible and by text message to a mobile phone where the applicant does not have a personal e-mail address. Tickets will be sent directly to the address provided on the application form – there is no collection facility.
  • When you apply online, please check to see if your application has been successful; you may need to check your spam and junk mail folders.
  • Unsuccessful applicants will not be notified.

    General Ballot Terms
    Chelmsford Council and their partners cannot accept any responsibility whatsoever for any technical failure or malfunction or any other problem with any system, server, provider or otherwise which may result in any email or application being lost or not properly registered or recorded.
     
  • No responsibility can be accepted for late or lost applications.
  • Proof of sending is not proof of receipt.
  • Applicants must supply full details as required and comply with all rules and regulations to be eligible for the ticket(s). No responsibility is accepted for ineligible applications, or applications made fraudulently.
  • The personal details you provide when entering the ballot will only be used by Chelmsford Council concerned with the administration and security of the event. Information will only be held for as long as is necessary to ensure full, proper and appropriate administration of the event, following the event and be treated in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. You will also have an option for Chelmsford Council and its partners to use your details to notify you of future events and offers. If you do not want this to happen, you may opt out of receiving future marketing.

    This event is administered by Chelmsford Council. Chelmsford Council retains a discretionary right throughout to alter, amend or change the Ballot Rules.

     
    Ticket Terms & Conditions
    Attendance at the event is subject to the following conditions and any other statements or directives either displayed on the premises or within promotional literature.

    1. All ticket holders will be required to provide contact details at time of booking to obtain an allocation of tickets.
    2. All persons including babies must have a ticket to enter the event.
    3. Ticket holders park vehicles and enter the event at their own risk.
    4. All conditions shown on the tickets are to be read together with all other statements or directives either shown on the ticket, displayed on the site or conditions literature.
    5. The possession of your ticket shall constitute an acceptance by the holder of these conditions and imply an undertaking on the part of the holder to observe them. In the event of any breach of these conditions the organisers reserve the right to cancel your ticket and retain any monies paid by you in respect of postage and packing.
    6. Persons aged 14 and under must be accompanied by an adult of 18 or older – ID may be required on the gate.
    7. A maximum of 6 tickets may be booked per household.
    8. Ticket holders consent to being filmed, photographed and recorded and understand that photographs, films or recordings of ticket holders may be broadcast, published, licensed or used in perpetuity (without payment).
    9. Ticket holders agree that any images, videos, or sound recordings taken at the event may only be used for private and domestic purposes and cannot be used for any commercial purposes, whether on the internet or otherwise.
    10. We regret that the organisers accept no responsibility for loss, damage or injury.
    11. Ticket holders release the London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games Limited (LOCOG), the International Olympic Committee (IOC) and the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) from any liability for any loss or damage to personal property that may be suffered in relation to the event. Except as required by law, none of LOCOG, the IOC or the IPC shall have any liability to ticket holders.
    12. The organisers reserve the right to change the programme without prior notice and to cancel or postpone any activity, and shall not be liable to ticket holders for any monies paid in respect of postage and packing.
    13. Tickets are non transferable and cannot be exchanged, refunded, replaced, resold nor advertised for sale whether on the internet in newspaper or elsewhere.
    14. Duplicate tickets will not be issued if lost or damaged.
    15. The organisers reserve the right to refuse entry or to require any ticket holder to leave the premises. Any person found to be behaving in a manner deemed unsociable or potentially dangerous will be ejected from the event without refund.
    16. Strictly no glass, glass bottles, picnic tables, gazebos, barbeques or garden flares are permitted on the premises – any found will be confiscated.
    17. In the interests of safety, no chairs are permitted within the arena for the Olympic Torch Relay Evening Celebration show up to 7.30pm.
    18. With the exception of special assistance dogs, no animals are permitted onto the premises.
    19. No smoking is permitted within any structure at the premises.
    20. It is a licence condition that no alcohol may be brought on to the premises. Alcohol may be purchased from the licensed bars situated on site. Any alcohol deemed to have been brought on to the premises will be confiscated.
    21. The organiser reserves the right to search all persons and personal property and refuse admission to, or eject from, the premises any person who refuses to be searched by a security official. The organiser reserves the right to confiscate items which may cause danger or disruption to the event or other patrons.
